When you picture a heroic rescue from a dangerous dragon, what do you imagine them wearing? Armour, maybe, or at least a leather vest… but what about a paper bag? The Paper Bag Princess follows Princess Elizabeth, a young royal forced to don a paper bag while saving her kingdom and her prince. Let’s jump into a quick review of this classic children’s book!
When the fiercest dragon in the whole world smashes Princess Elizabeth’s castle, burns all her clothes, and captures her fiancé, Prince Ronald, Elizabeth takes matters into her own hands. With her wits alone and nothing but a paper bag to wear, the princess challenges the dragon to show his strength in the hopes of saving the prince. But is it worth all that trouble?
My Thoughts
The Paper Bag Princess is such a great story! The artwork on each page is expressive and unique, with the harsh edges adding to the feeling of a harsh, desolate environment. The story itself is great for young girls, giving them a role model of a princess who has to make sacrifices and use her wits to solve a difficult problem. Even though it’s a children’s book, The Paper Bag Princess ends with a fun and surprising plot twist. I only wish the book itself was a little longer; it’s only 24 pages long, and without the art, it is only 12 pages long.
Conclusion
Although The Paper Bag Princess is short, the entertaining artwork and important lesson easily makes up for the lack of pages. The story is uplifting and highlights a young girl who relies on her own smarts to solve her own problems. I loved this classic story as a child, and I love it now just as much!
