Ever since Disney released the popular movie, The Sword in the Stone, children have been drawn to the legends of King Arthur and Merlin. These legends have everything necessary for a great tale, from magic to mystery to myth. I myself am a major fan of the BBC television series based off of these stories. However, the original books by T.H. White are quite lengthy (and, while spectacular, maybe not ideal for younger children). My obsession with all things Merlin meant that, as soon as I saw this book on Amazon, I knew I had to get it.
Book 1 in the series of Arthurian legends – retold at an easy-to-read level for younger readers!
All Merlin knows is the village where he mixes potions for wary customers, and dreams strange dreams that sometimes come true. Then a mysterious hooded man appears, seeking a boy with no mortal father, and Merlin is taken far away, to a crumbling tower and a ruthless king. To a place where his is not the only magic.
My Thoughts
Firstly, this story is a simplified version of one of my all-time favorite classics. Even better, No Ordinary Boy is the first book in a long series following the many legends surrounding King Arthur. I think it is a wonderful way to introduce kids to series and longer books. Not only does it end on a cliffhanger, but several mysteries are left to be resolved in future stories. Arthur is mentioned during a prophecy that Merlin sees, laying the groundwork for their relationship in the future.
When it comes to the illustrations throughout the book, I must say that I was impressed. There was a picture on every page, sometimes even two per page. The art was fun and young, fitting for the audience of the book, while still telling the story. The characters were each distinguishable from the others, which I’ve found while reading to younger children is essential for them following the plot.
Conclusion
I love seeing authors and illustrators breaking out of traditional “kid’s stories,” and No Ordinary Boy really does an excellent job of telling the classic story of King Arthur in a way that kids will understand and appreciate. Even though I am no longer a child, I enjoyed this story. The pacing was quick, and the characters were fun, and the tale stayed true to the original legend.
